Land Use

The way land is used is fundamental to sustainable urban development. Land use planning can enhance a city's identity, cultural heritage, energy efficiency, green space and biodiversity. Poor land use planning has created urban areas that are unattractive to live in with settlement patterns that are not sustainable. The threats include:

New Information and Communication Technologies
Urban Sprawl
Urbanisation and loss of greenfield land
Dereliction and underused urban land
Loss of green space within urban areas
Demographic trends
Economic trends: richer households seek more space and mobility
Social preferences: flight to the suburbs continues
Market preferences: commercial development is attracted to greenfield sites
Increased mobility: the real cost of private transport is declining
